On Monday 22 February, both the Nifty and Sensex corrected sharply for the fifth day in succession. In fact, now Nifty has given negative returns on 6 out of the last 7 days. There are several reasons. Rising bond yields and fears of a resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic halted the rally in the stock markets.

On Monday, the Sensex lost 1145 points and the Nifty lost 306 points from the Friday levels. Just a handful of heavyweight stocks managed to hold their own in the volatile market. ONGC, Kotak Bank and HDFC Bank were among the few that managed to hold in the green despite the virtual carnage in the stock markets on Monday.

Big value losers included the technology and pharma majors during the day. Tech Mahindra, M&M, Reddy Labs, Reliance Industries, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, TCS and Maruti Suzuki were among the key stocks that gave up value. Even the Nifty A/D ratio was unfavourable at 10:40. The pressure was lower in mid-caps with the benchmark index closing just 1.34% lower. In terms of sectors, metals dazzled brightly but IT and pharma took deep cuts.
