There is finally a firm announcement on the date of the launch of the vaccination program across India. The government has confirmed that it will start the COVID-19 vaccination drive from 16 January. However, considering the size and spread of India, this is likely to be one of the most complex and elaborate exercise in inoculation ever undertaken in the world.

The Prime Minister has already reviewed the status of COVID-19 in the country along with the preparedness of the various states and UTs for COVID vaccination. The process could have started earlier but the government felt that in view of the forthcoming festivals including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bihu etc, 16 Jan would be the apt date.

When the vaccine is rolled out, the government has confirmed that it will accord priority to healthcare workers and the frontline workers who are estimated to be around 3 crore in numbers. Subsequently, those above 50 years of age and those under-50 with co-morbidities will be covered. This number is anticipated at 27 crore.

A total of 2360 participants were trained during national level training for those administering the vaccine and it included state immunization officers, cold chain officers, development partners etc. The trained pool now includes 61,000 programme managers, 2 lakh vaccinators and over 3.7 lakh vaccination team members.
