Despite the vagaries of the market and a disappointing closing, the good news for the week ending 12 March was that 8 out of the top-10 most valuable companies by market capitalization ended up adding nearly Rs.72,443 crore in value. In fact, the only two companies that lost value during the week were SBI and Reliance Industries.

Apart from SBI and RIL, that saw value erosion during the week. The other 8 stocks in the most valuable list have seen value accretion. The week, in a way, once again belonged to the conservative IT industry. In terms of market cap accretion, Infosys was the clear leader in the week adding Rs.24,963 crore to market cap while TCS added Rs.18,458 crore.

Among other value additions, the banking and financials did pretty well during the week. Among value accretion cases were HDFC Bank adding Rs.12,124 crore to its market cap, Bajaj Finance adding Rs.6,644 crore to its market value, HDFC adding Rs.4,436 crore, Kotak Bank added Rs.2,648 crore while ICICI Bank managed to add Rs.2,231 crore.

On the downside, Reliance Industries lost Rs.25,294 crore in market value. The stock had rallied quite sharply in the last few weeks and there was some visible profit taking seen in the counter. The same was the situation with SBI also which saw depletion of Rs.2,320 crore in market value for the week. SBI had also shown a sharp rally in the recent past.
