As the world moves rapidly close to the vaccine, the big question is how India would manage the process flow and the logistics of the entire event. It may be recollected that the Pfizer / BionTech vaccine candidate has already received emergency approval in the UK and is close to getting emergency authorization in India too.

In the meanwhile, they have also applied for emergency usage authorization with the US FDA, which is the biggest market and which would pave the way for easy access to many other markets across Asia and Europe.

However, according to Pfizer there are more pressing issues that Pfizer needs to address in the Indian context. For example, Pfizer’s Indian manufacturing and distribution partner Serum Institute, has already applied to the Indian government for an emergency usage authorization to allow the vaccine to be used and administered with greater speed.

According to Pfizer, there are other issues it is worried about in the Indian context. The vaccine requires -70 degrees temperature warehousing and that level of cooling on a commercially viable basis is just not available in India. That could pose a huge challenge.

Refrigeration and storage of vaccines assumes significance in the Indian context due to the vast distances within the country and the poor infrastructure including bad roads. On the pricing front, Pfizer has been non-committal. However, it has clarified that pricing would largely predicate on the quantities ordered and future commitments given.
